Caring for Your Heat Pump
What is a heatpump?
In the summer, an air-to-air heat pump operates as a standard air conditioner, collecting heat from the air in your home and expelling it outside.
In the winter, the process is reversed, so that the heat pump collects heat from outdoor air to warm the air inside your home.
A heat pump's operation and efficiency comes from a principle known as heat transfer. Rather than creating heat, the electric heat pump utilizes existing heat and simply moves it to the desired location.
Most heat pumps have a supplemental system to boost the heat when it is extremely cold. It can either be electric heat strips or a gas furnace.
A Packaged heat pump is a self-contained single unit system.
A Split System heat pump is a two piece heat pump unit that includes components inside and outside your home.

Usage:
- Set your thermostat on a comfortable temperature and leave it there.
- Keep air supply registers & all doors open at all times.
- Never block supply or return registers with furniture, draperies or other objects.
- Never place a lamp, television or other heat producing objects near the thermostat. This will cause the system to over cool or under heat.
Care:
- Check air filters monthly & replace if necessary. NEVER run the unit without a filter.
- Vacuum return air registers regularly.
- Do not stack objects on or against the ductwork in the attic or under your home.
- Keep a one-foot clearance between the outdoor unit & shrubs. And always allow space for service work to be performed.
- Never cover the outdoor unit, it is designed for being in the weather.
- Have your system inspected twice a year by a qualified technician.
